The Greenbriar Bunker

brick pathway leading to a large white colonial style building

Today Gabby and I got to visit the formerly secret bunker under the famous resort of Greenbrier, West Virginia! The 11,000 acres of this elite hotel/spa/golf course/plastic surgery/horseback riding (etc) resort was also a hidden cover for a nuclear fallout shelter designed to hold 1,000 members of Congress and their staff in case Washington DC got bombed. It was completely functional for 30 years from 1962-1992, and now is used for various reasons including cyber security safety (that’s why I could only take a photo of the entrance with the formerly hidden doorway). The contrast between the bunker’s stark Cold-War subterranean space and the Southern-style luxury of the Greenbrier Hotel atop was macabre and fascinating!
