McAfee Knob is one of the most iconic vistas along the Appalachian Trail. Its elevation is only about 3,200 feet, which is typical for these ancient, weathered mountains. The stunning views provided by the overlook include the Roanoke Valley below and North Mountain.
Only 100 years earlier, a lot of the land had been cleared for farming, and I felt inspired by the success of the replanted forests (the section north of McAfee Knob had a lot of Tulip poplar trees and the lushness of the green in June was outstanding).
The mountain got its name from a Scotch-Irish settler from the 1730s named James McAfee.
