Hawk Mountain Preserve in Eastern Pennsylvania

This is one of the many stellar views at Hawk Mountain Preserve in eastern Pennsylvania, one of the best places in the northern United States to watch many native hawk species in their migrations and habitats. This beautiful wildlife sanctuary was made possible because of two people in particular. First, the ornithologist Robert Pough — he conducted a public exposure of horrifying images of hundreds of shot hawks in the area. At the time, the United States had offered a great deal of reward money for killing certain predatory birds. (See second image.) The second individual was the wildlife conservationist Rosalie Edge, who visited the area in 1934, leased and then purchased the 1,400 acres as a sanctuary for the hawks, and hired wardens and other like-minded activists to care for the land. Because of Edge and Pough, we and the birds continue to enjoy the views and terrain today.
